March 20 Late Service Sermon Palm Sunday Late Service
Mark 11:1-10  IMG_0456 1Now when they drew near to Jerusalem, to Bethphage and Bethany, at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two of his disciples 2 and said to them, “Go into the village in front of you, and immediately as you enter it you will find a colt tied, on which no one has ever sat. Untie it and bring it. 3 If anyone says to you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ say, ‘The Lord has need of it and will send it back here immediately.’” 4 And they went away and found a colt tied at a door outside in the street, and they untied it. 5 And some of those standing there said to them, “What are you doing, untying the colt?” 6 And they told them what Jesus had said, and they let them go. 7 And they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks on it, and he sat on it. 8 And many spread their cloaks on the road, and others spread leafy branches that they had cut from the fields. 9 And those who went before and those who followed were shouting, “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! 10
Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David! Hosanna in the highest!”

22:63Now the men who were holding Jesus in custody were mocking Him as they beat Him. 64They also blindfolded Him and kept asking Him, “Prophesy! Who is it that struck You?” 65And they said many other things against Him, blaspheming Him. 66When day came, the assembly of the elders of the people gathered together, both chief priests and scribes. And they led Him away to their council, and they said, 67“If You are the Christ, tell us.” But He said to them, “If I tell you, you will not believe, 68and if I ask you, you will not answer. 69But from now on the Son of Man shall be seated at the right hand of the power of God.” 70So they all said, “Are You the Son of God, then?” And He said to them, “You say that I am.” 71Then they said, “What further testimony do we need? We have heard it ourselves from His own lips.” 23:1Then the whole company of them arose and brought Him before Pilate. 2And they began to accuse Him, saying, “We found this man misleading our nation and forbidding us to give tribute to Caesar, and saying that He Himself is Christ, a king.” 3And Pilate asked Him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” And He answered him, “You have said so.” 4Then Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowds, “I find no guilt in this man.” 5But they were urgent, saying, “He stirs up the people, teaching throughout all Judea, from Galilee even to this place.” 6When Pilate heard this, he asked whether the man was a Galilean. 7And when he learned that He belonged to Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent Him over to Herod, who was himself in Jerusalem at that time. 8When Herod saw Jesus, he was very glad, for he had long desired to see Him, because he had heard about Him, and he was hoping to see some sign done by Him. 9So he questioned Him at some length, but He made no answer. 10The chief priests and the scribes stood by, vehemently accusing Him. 11And Herod with his soldiers treated Him with contempt and mocked Him. Then, arraying Him in splendid clothing, he sent Him back to Pilate. 12And Herod and Pilate became friends with each other that very day, for before this they had been at enmity with each other. 13Pilate then called together the chief priests and the rulers and the people, 14and said to them, “You brought me this man as one who was misleading the people. And after examining Him before you, behold, I did not find this man guilty of any of your charges against Him. 15Neither did Herod, for he sent Him back to us. Look, nothing deserving death has been done by Him. 16I will therefore punish and release Him.” 18But they all cried out together, “Away with this man, and release to us Barabbas”—19a man who had been thrown into prison for an insurrection started in the city and for murder. 20Pilate addressed them once more, desiring to release Jesus, 21but they kept shouting, “Crucify, crucify Him!” 22A third time he said to them, “Why, what evil has He done? I have found in Him no guilt deserving death. I will therefore punish and release Him.” 23But they were urgent, demanding with loud cries that He should be crucified. And their voices prevailed. 24So Pilate decided that their demand should be granted. 25He released the man who had been thrown into prison for insurrection and murder, for whom they asked, but he delivered Jesus over to their will.

Paul lays out his fake argument for being self-justified by His works as a perfect Jew. He throws it all out, instead clinging to Jesus. We too have confidence in our place before God because of our relationship with Jesus Christ. 8Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ 9and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith— 10that I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, 11
that by any means possible I may attain the resurrection from the dead.
12Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. 13Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, 14
I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

Luke 22:54–62 IMG_0443   54Then they seized Him and led Him away, bringing Him into the high priest’s house, and Peter was following at a distance. 55And when they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat down together, Peter sat down among them. 56Then a servant girl, seeing him as he sat in the light and looking closely at him, said, “This man also was with Him.” 57But he denied it, saying, “Woman, I do not know Him.” 58And a little later someone else saw him and said, “You also are one of them.” But Peter said, “Man, I am not.” 59And after an interval of about an hour still another insisted, saying, “Certainly this man also was with Him, for he too is a Galilean.” 60But Peter said, “Man, I do not know what you are talking about.” And immediately, while he was still speaking, the rooster crowed. 61And the Lord turned and looked at Peter. And Peter remembered the saying of the Lord, how He had said to him, “Before the rooster crows today, you will deny Me three times.” 62And he went out and wept bitterly.

Jesus tells the parable of the Prodigal Son to a crowd containing a group of tax collectors and sinners along with the religious leaders, Pharisees and scribes. This parable fits them into the story, and challenges us in multiple ways to accept and enjoy our place in God’s family.   1
Now the tax collectors and sinners were all drawing near to hear [Jesus].
    2
And the Pharisees and the scribes grumbled, saying, “This man receives sinners and eats with them.”
    3
So he told them this parable:
11And he said, “There was a man who had two sons. 12And the younger of them said to his father, ‘Father, give me the share of property that is coming to me.’ And he divided his property between them. 13Not many days later, the younger son gathered all he had and took a journey into a far country, and there he squandered his property in reckless living. 14And when he had spent everything, a severe famine arose in that country, and he began to be in need. 15So he went and hired himself out to one of the citizens of that country, who sent him into his fields to feed pigs. 16
And he was longing to be fed with the pods that the pigs ate, and no one gave him anything.
17“But when he came to himself, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have more than enough bread, but I perish here with hunger! 18I will arise and go to my father, and I will say to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you. 19I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Treat me as one of your hired servants.”’ 20And he arose and came to his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and felt compassion, and ran and embraced him and kissed him. 21And the son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’ 22But the father said to his servants, ‘Bring quickly the best robe, and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet. 23And bring the fattened calf and kill it, and let us eat and celebrate. 24
For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found.’ And they began to celebrate.
25“Now his older son was in the field, and as he came and drew near to the house, he heard music and dancing. 26And he called one of the servants and asked what these things meant. 27And he said to him, ‘Your brother has come, and your father has killed the fattened calf, because he has received him back safe and sound.’ 28But he was angry and refused to go in. His father came out and entreated him, 29but he answered his father, ‘Look, these many years I have served you, and I never disobeyed your command, yet you never gave me a young goat, that I might celebrate with my friends. 30But when this son of yours came, who has devoured your property with prostitutes, you killed the fattened calf for him!’ 31And he said to him, ‘Son, you are always with me, and all that is mine is yours. 32
It was fitting to celebrate and be glad, for this your brother was dead, and is alive; he was lost, and is found.’”

47While He was still speaking, there came a crowd, and the man called Judas, one of the twelve, was leading them. He drew near to Jesus to kiss Him, 48but Jesus said to him, “Judas, would you betray the Son of Man with a kiss?” 49And when those who were around Him saw what would follow, they said, “Lord, shall we strike with the sword?” 50And one of them struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his right ear. 51But Jesus said, “No more of this!” And He touched his ear and healed him. 52Then Jesus said to the chief priests and officers of the temple and elders, who had come out against Him, “Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs? 53When I was with you day after day in the temple, you did not lay hands on Me. But this is your hour, and the power of darkness.”

    1 Corinthians 10:1–13
    IMG_0436
Israel’s history contains great lessons for us to learn from. Paul walks us through the desert wanderings for the Corinthian congregation so they might see Jesus proclaimed. This not only gives us salvation but goes on to teach us how we are to live.   1I want you to know, brothers, that our fathers were all under the cloud, and all passed through the sea, 2and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, 3and all ate the same spiritual food, 4and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank from the spiritual Rock that followed them, and the Rock was Christ. 5Nevertheless, with most of them God was not pleased, for they were overthrown in the wilderness. 6Now these things took place as examples for us, that we might not desire evil as they did. 7Do not be idolaters as some of them were; as it is written, “The people sat down to eat and drink and rose up to play.” 8We must not indulge in sexual immorality as some of them did, and twenty-three thousand fell in a single day. 9We must not put Christ to the test, as some of them did and were destroyed by serpents, 10nor grumble, as some of them did and were destroyed by the Destroyer. 11Now these things happened to them as an example, but they were written down for our instruction, on whom the end of the ages has come. 12Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall. 13No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.

39And He came out and went, as was His custom, to the Mount of Olives, and the disciples followed Him. 40And when He came to the place, He said to them, “Pray that you may not enter into temptation.” 41And He withdrew from them about a stone’s throw, and knelt down and prayed, 42saying, “Father, if You are willing, remove this cup from Me. Nevertheless, not My will, but Yours, be done.” 43And there appeared to Him an angel from heaven, strengthening Him. 44And being in an agony He prayed more earnestly; and His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground. 45And when He rose from prayer, He came to the disciples and found them sleeping for sorrow, 46and He said to them, “Why are you sleeping? Rise and pray that you may not enter into temptation.”

Nothing will deter Jesus from His goal. Herod can’t stop Him, the love of crowds can’t stop Him, and the disciples can’t stop Him.  Even though His heart breaks for all who will reject Him, He still must take the path through Jerusalem that will ultimately lead to His execution.
At that very hour some Pharisees came and said to [Jesus], “Get away from here, for Herod wants to kill you.”
32And he said to them, “Go and tell that fox, ‘Behold, I cast out demons and perform cures today and tomorrow, and the third day I finish my course. 33Nevertheless, I must go on my way today and tomorrow and the day following, for it cannot be that a prophet should perish away from Jerusalem.’ 34O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you would not! 35
Behold, your house is forsaken. And I tell you, you will not see me until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!’”

Luke 22:14–38 IMG_0425 14And when the hour came, He reclined at table, and the apostles with Him. 15And He said to them, “I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. 16For I tell you I will not eat it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.” 17And He took a cup, and when He had given thanks He said, “Take this, and divide it among yourselves. 18For I tell you that from now on I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.” 19And He took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is My body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of Me.” 20And likewise the cup after they had eaten, saying, “This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in My blood. 21But behold, the hand of him who betrays Me is with me on the table. 22For the Son of Man goes as it has been determined, but woe to that man by whom He is betrayed!” 23And they began to question one another, which of them it could be who was going to do this. 24A dispute also arose among them, as to which of them was to be regarded as the greatest. 25And He said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them, and those in authority over them are called benefactors. 26But not so with you. Rather, let the greatest among you become as the youngest, and the leader as one who serves. 27For who is the greater, one who reclines at table or one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines at table? But I am among you as the one who serves. 28“You are those who have stayed with Me in My trials, 29and I assign to you, as my Father assigned to Me, a kingdom, 30that you may eat and drink at My table in My kingdom and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel. 31“Simon, Simon, behold, Satan demanded to have you, that he might sift you like wheat, 32but I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned again, strengthen your brothers.” 33Peter said to Him, “Lord, I am ready to go with You both to prison and to death.” 34Jesus said, “I tell you, Peter, the rooster will not crow this day, until you deny three times that you know Me.” 35And He said to them, “When I sent you out with no moneybag or knapsack or sandals, did you lack anything?” They said, “Nothing.” 36He said to them, “But now let the one who has a moneybag take it, and likewise a knapsack. And let the one who has no sword sell his cloak and buy one. 37For I tell you that this Scripture must be fulfilled in Me: ‘And He was numbered with the transgressors.’ For what is written about Me has its fulfillment.” 38And they said, “Look, Lord, here are two swords.” And He said to them, “It is enough.”
